The 55-metre sloop Gemma features a deckhouse in electro-chromic glass, so that the opacity can be changed. It can be darkened during the day to protect guests, while completely clear during the evening. The concept is the work of Alberto Franchi and Antonino Muto, graduates in naval and nautical design at the University of Genoa.

Inside, Gemma sleeps 12 guests and eight crew. “We thought of a deckhouse of this type because we wanted a covered space that could put the guests in touch with the environment without having to be in the outdoor area,” the designers say. Guest spaces include a salon with bar, sofas and dining, as well as a lounge bar with a balcony over the sea. The owner’s cabin is aft and there’s a gym amidships.

“Our passion for the sea has always inspired us. The link with nature has addressed our enthusiasm for the environment of sailing, and with Gemma we tried to make our small contribution to innovate in a sector as traditional and charming as sailboats,” the designers add.
