Motor Yacht A makes our Hall of Fame for the sheer daring of the design and of the owner who commissioned a yacht that truly shook the industry

MOTOR YACHT A

Yard Blohm+Voss Year 2008 LOA 119.0m Designer Philippe Starck

What makes her so special? Probably the most recognisable superyacht on the water, there is still very little that has been officially released about A. She’s certainly a yacht to divide opinion, but nobody can fail to admire the daring of an owner who commissioned such a beast. She’s named after the first names of owners Andrey and Aleksandra Melnichenko – a simple touch that has always been a delightful contrast to the complexity of the yacht.

She cruises extensively – recently, a winter in the Caribbean included a stopover in St Barths during the Bucket, which then led to a cruise back to the Med in time for the Monaco Grand Prix via northern European beauty spots such as Iceland. Her reverse bow and superstructure aft give her the look of a military submarine, but her striking white hull and large glass windows place her firmly in the superyacht family.

Where is she now? Rumour has it that she is for sale, now that 143-metre Sailing Yacht A is nearing completion at the Nobiskrug yard.
